Blade bolting flanges

A bolting flange is used at the base of the blade to connect it to the hub. The design of the bolting flange varies from one turbine model to another.

Description of Manufacturing Process
Typically made from plates that are cut and welded together. Turning, and sometimes milling, are then used to ensure concentricity and tight surface tolerances. Finally, drilling and boring are used to create precise bolt holes.

Description of Supply Chain
Blade manufacturers usually buy welded and machined bolting flanges from third-party suppliers. The flanges are then bonded into the blade root structure using resin at the blade factory.

Scottish Opportunity
Relevance to Scottish Supply Chain: Medium

Existing blade factories in the UK might be interested in additional suppliers for the supply of blade bolting flanges. Scottish suppliers will however have to compete against established suppliers.
