Parts for major components refurbishment
Wind turbine major components include the generator, main gearbox, pitch system, etc.
Description of Manufacturing Process
Typically forged or casted and subsequently machined for pin holes, mating surfaces and other precision features. Machining may include turning, milling, drilling, boring and tapping.
Description of Supply Chain
Refurbishment of major components by third party O&M contractors is less common than for minor components. When undertaken, the parts are most often procured from OEMs rather than from local manufacturers.
Scottish Opportunity
Relevance to Scottish Supply Chain: Low
Demand for local manufacturers to supply bespoke parts for major components is expected to remain relatively low. Major components replacement or refurbishment will typically involve the OEM, which has established manufacturers unlikely to be displaced by Scottish suppliers
