Parts for minor components refurbishment
Wind turbine minor components include the yaw system, secondary brakes, secondary motors and pumps, etc.
Description of Manufacturing Process
Typically forged or casted and subsequently machined for pin holes, mating surfaces and other precision features. Machining may include turning, milling, drilling, boring and tapping.
Description of Supply Chain
While new spare parts are typically procured from the OEMs' catalogue, third party O&M contractors often rely on local manufacturers to provide bespoke parts for the refurbishment of minor components. This is especially relevant for post-warranty assets that are maintained by third party O&M contractors and for which spare parts may not be made easily available by the OEM.
Scottish Opportunity
Relevance to Scottish Supply Chain: Medium
Although third party O&M contracts for offshore wind farms are currently less common than for onshore wind farms, they are expected to become increasingly common as the average operational age of offshore assets in Scotland increases. Demand for local manufacturers to supply bespoke parts is therefore likely to increase.
