Rolled steel tubulars

Several floating substructure designs use cylindrical sections that are connected together to form a large stable platform.

Description of Manufacturing Process
Large steel sheets are plasma or laser cut to create accurate shapes and bevels ready to be rolled and welded

Description of Supply Chain
The floating offshore wind industry is relatively nascent, with large-scale supply chains not yet established. It is expected that plate steel will be purchased by the substructure manufacturer before being cut, rolled and welded in house.

Scottish Opportunity
Relevance to Scottish Supply Chain: Medium

Since floating offshore wind supply chain routes are not yet established, Scottish suppliers have the opportunity to position themselves as first movers. Close coordination will be required with substructure designers and manufacturers to meet the complex timescales and location requirements.
