Tower to floater flange

Bolting flanges are used at the interface between the floating substructure and the turbine tower.

Description of Manufacturing Process
Typically made from forged or rolled steel rings. Turning, and sometimes milling, are then used to ensure concentricity and tight surface tolerances. Finally, drilling and boring are used to create precise bolt holes.

Description of Supply Chain
The floating offshore wind industry is relatively nascent, with large-scale supply chains not yet established. It is expected that plate steel will be purchased by the substructure manufacture before being cut and machined in house.

Scottish Opportunity
Relevance to Scottish Supply Chain: Medium

Since floating offshore wind supply chain routes are not yet established, Scottish suppliers have the opportunity to position themselves as first movers. Close coordination will be required with substructure designers and manufacturers to meet the complex timescales and location requirements.
